There are two ways to calculate LTV, and they are not close to interchangeable.

Margin-basis LTV = AOV × gross margin % × purchase frequency × lifespan. This version stops at the point where the business actually keeps money, after the cost of goods sold.

Revenue-basis LTV = $65 × 1.8 × 2.5 = $292.50

How Do You Calculate the LTV:CAC Ratio?
Once you have margin-basis LTV, divide it by whichever CAC number you're testing. That's the entire formula:

Using the numbers above, and the same brand's blended CAC of $80 from the CAC worked example:

The LTV:CAC ratio and CAC payback period both measure whether acquisition spend makes sense, but they answer different questions. LTV:CAC asks "is this customer worth more than they cost, over their full lifetime." CAC payback asks "how many months until we get that spend back." A brand can have a strong LTV:CAC ratio and still be cash-strapped if payback takes 14 months, because the ratio doesn't care when the money shows up, only that it eventually does.
How Do You Improve Your LTV:CAC Ratio?
Both sides of the ratio can move, but they move at very different speeds. Lifetime value shifts slowly — it takes months of repeat-purchase data to see a real change in frequency or retention. CAC reacts week to week, which makes it the faster lever in practice.
